| The phpLinkDirectory script has been around for quite a number of years in various versions, but has more recently gone through a number of enhancements and upgrades which makes it much more than a directory script. VALUE
Both free and paid-for versions of the script are available, but In terms of value, the pricing of the 'premium' version could not be considered premium at all. Even the purchase of the unbranded version of the script is much lower than it's competitors. Not that you will ever need it, but throw in life-time access to the supporters forum and the value gets even better.
SUPPORT
This is a very subjective issue. While there may sometimes be complaints about support, if you analyse the complaints, you will find that they are virtually all misguided. Many people install the script, make changes to the base code and then complain it doesn't work and then wonder why they don't get immediate help. This is a lot like buying a new car, putting water in the tank and then complaining to the manufactuer that it won't run. While a car manufacturer will probably laugh at you and charge you a fortune for a fix, the fact of the matter is that the phpLD team will usually give assistance, but will always prioritise genuine script related support issues over user created problems.
For most installs, the script works just fine 'out of the box', but due to the infinite differences in hosts, servers and configurations, sometimes a few tweaks are needed to get it running. If this is the case with your install, then the phpLD will always offer free assistance to get you up and running. Of course, hosts sometimes change settings and configurations and as wil any website, this may cause your script to behave in an unexpexted manner. Again, the phpLD will help where possible ane get you back up and running.
FEATURES
The script has continually evolved over time with update and new features and functions being made available all the time. So much so, that it can be a frustrating experience for a webmaster that always wants the latest version. However, frustrations aside, development is a good thing and stagnation is not. Many directory scripts available for purchase at a much higher price have stagnated and have limited support.
Generally, you will find that most enhancements to newer versions can be added to existing installs relatively easily and without the need for a complete reinstallation and upgrade. Of course, sometimes you might need paid assistance, but there are plenty of experienced phpLD users and third-party developers that can offer you cost-effective assistance.
The script itself obviously obviously has support for links, but can quite easily be used as a business directory with the need for URL's in the listings. With Google Maps available, it's perfect for a local business directory. By default, the script supports several listing options, that can all be configured from a well designed and intuitive admin panel. You are able to set up Reciprocal, Free, Regular and Featured listings with various durations and pricing. Modifications exist that allow you to add and configure an infinite amount of extra linking options, such as category sponsors, more durations and pricing options for each listing type etc.
Article listings are also well supported and you are also able to sell different levels of these as well.
A built in ratings and comments system allows users to review both articles and link listings. This can be restricted to just registered users or limit the amount of ratings or comments a user can make from any one IP address in a given period of time. Reviews are listed in admin and can either be approved immediatly or wait for admin approval.
